In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Newtons-law-of-gravitation\">Newton\u2019s law of universal gravitation<\/a>, the attractive force between two objects (<em>F<\/em>) is equal to&nbsp;<em>G<\/em>&nbsp;times the product of their masses (<em>m<\/em><sub>1<\/sub><em>m<\/em><sub>2<\/sub>) divided by the square of the distance between them (<em>r<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>); that is,&nbsp;<em>F<\/em>&nbsp;=&nbsp;<em>Gm<\/em><sub>1<\/sub><em>m<\/em><sub>2<\/sub>\/<em>r<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>. The experiment was performed in 1797\u201398 by the English scientist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Henry-Cavendish\">Henry Cavendish<\/a>.
