This can occur\nspontaneously or due to a collision with a neutron. Often extra neutrons are\nproduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"chain-reaction\">Chain Reaction<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When neutrons split nuclei by fission and extra neutrons are produced which can split further nuclei. Large quantities of energy are produced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"reducing-exposure-to-ionising-radiation\">Reducing\nexposure to ionising radiation.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are 3 groups of category to reduce harm caused by\nradiation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MONITOR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SHIELD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DISTANCE<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-bright-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Monitor\nincludes things like wearing radiation badges or EPUs, timing how long you are\nexposed to radiation, checking with radiation counters any contamination on\nclothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-bright-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Shielding\nis placing layers of absorbers between you and the source, BEWARE, goggles and\na lab coat are great at protecting against alpha but have no effect on gamma.\nOnly thick layers of lead would offer protection against gamma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-dark-red-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Distance. Radiation obeys the inverse square law, as you double the distance from a source the level you are exposed to decreases by \u00bc . Using tongs is an effective method of keeping your distance from a source.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To give you an idea of the radiation dose that would occur with radiotherapy, here is my mum&#8217;s dose. I know that she&#8217;d have been happy to share this with you as a learning experience.
