This is said square metre. I am not wrong, I am not daft and I want the world to say it properly.<\/p>\n<p>or what&#8217;s the unit of area? If you looked at the length of each side it would be 2 m long! QED!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updated 13\/05\/2023 (see below)<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:International_System_of_Units_Logo.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/5\/55\/International_System_of_Units_Logo.png\/512px-International_System_of_Units_Logo.png\" alt=\"International System of Units Logo\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Metre<\/strong> is the unit of <strong>length<\/strong> in the <strong>SI system<\/strong> and <strong>square metre <\/strong>is the<strong> SI units <\/strong>for calculating<strong> area. \u00a0<\/strong>The confusion arises when we see square metre written or spoken. People cannot make out the difference between <strong>square metre<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>metres squared<\/strong> and assume they are the same, which they are not!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-390 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-390\" src=\"https:\/\/mrsphysics-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-by-2-square.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The correct size of the room<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a square room has a length of 2 metres and is 2 metres in breadth,\u00a0you can easily calculate its area with this formula.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Area= Length x Breadth<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>A=l \u00d7 b<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>2 metres x 2 metres<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>A = 2 m \u00d7 2 m<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><u>4 square metres<\/u><\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong><u>A = 4 m<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2<\/span><\/sup><\/u><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room has an area of 4 square metres, 4 m<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2<\/span><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you say that this is 4 metres squared what you mean is an area which has the length of 4 metres and you are multiplying it by a breadth of 4 metres which would give you an area of 16 square metres.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-391 size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" class=\"wp-image-391\" src=\"https:\/\/mrsphysics-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-by-4-square-300x297.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-by-4-square-300x297.png 300w, https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-by-4-square-10x10.png 10w, https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-by-4-square-60x60.png 60w, https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-by-4-square-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-by-4-square-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-by-4-square.png 372w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Overestimating the size of the room by giving the wrong units.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>An Area = 4 metres squared<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>4 metres x 4 metres<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><u>16 square metres m2<\/u><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if someone asks you the correct area of the room mentioned originally, you should say that the area is 4 <strong>square metres<\/strong>\u00a0 or 2 metres square both of which are correct answers, but the 4 m<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2<\/span><\/sup>, 4 square metres is standard.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>But beware more confusion arises as 1 m \u00d7 1 m = 1 square metres while 1 metre squared is also the same size as 1<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2<\/span><\/sup> = 1 metre square. You just get there by different routes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though the unit looks like it is written as metres squared you pronounce it <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">square metre<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hope this clears any confusion you might have on this one!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actually I ought to put a post script in!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The same applies to volumes<\/strong><br \/>The correct SI unit for <strong>volume<\/strong> is <strong>cubic metres<\/strong>, (or in Chemistry they might use cubic centimetres). If you say metres cubed you mean that this is the length of one side and you need to cube this value to get the volume.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" class=\"wp-image-394\" src=\"https:\/\/mrsphysics-co-uk.stackstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/431px-5cube_svg-300x228.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/431px-5cube_svg-300x228.png 300w, https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/431px-5cube_svg-10x8.png 10w, https:\/\/mrsphysics.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/431px-5cube_svg.png 431w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This cube could be described as <strong>125 cubic centimetres<\/strong> or 5 centimetres cubed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wasn&#8217;t sure that I ought to have posted this, but it looks like it\u00a0is less well understood than I imagined, definitely my only popular post!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just to show I am right, here is the page from the NPL site. Andy\u2019s alternative examples are also correct.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as the difference in size between square metres and metres squared (except when you have zero of each or one of each) there is a difference in shape. A metre square is a square with sides one metre in length &#8211; it refers to the shape and the side length, not the area. By contrast, a square metre is an area and can be any shape. These words are NOT defined in the SI system.
