European Day Without A Road Death

These pages share details of our Road Safety projects completed over the last few years. This work culminated in receiving the European Road Safety Awards – Special Jacques Barrot Prize in 2016. 🏆

“This year, a special prize was dedicated to Jacques Barrot, former Transport Commissioner and ardent supporter of road safety, who handed over the very first European Road Safety Award exactly ten years ago. The winner was selected by the audience present at the ceremony from among the five winners. It is: Lockerbie Academy (UK).”

Violeta Bulc said:

“I am very impressed with the commitment and creativity that this year’s winners have demonstrated. Grassroots initiatives like these are crucial in our efforts to reach our strategic goal to halve road fatalities by 2020. I can only encourage everyone, at whatever level you work, to carry on the great work and to pass on your experiences, so that great ideas can be used again elsewhere.”

Recent road safety statistics confirmed that European roads remain the safest in the world, although progress in reducing fatalities has slowed. Around 26,000 people still lost their lives on EU roads in one year alone – a reminder of why this work matters so much.

🏫 Lockerbie Academy (United Kingdom)

Lockerbie Academy integrated road safety into its educational programme, particularly through Physics topics such as speed, velocity, distance and braking. Working alongside Police Scotland, students simulated road crashes, surveyed staff and parents about driving in poor conditions, and created plans to assist drivers in different traffic situations.

The initiative was recognised for its innovation, impact and ability to be shared easily with other schools. It encouraged safer behaviour and built strong connections between generations in the community.
